Proprietary savoury biscuits of hard-baked whole wheat paste sticks, c4ins long, 1/4ins diameter of a highly distinctive knobbly form, strongly flavoured with splashes of salty yeast extract, similar in flavour to Marmite. Reputedly devised by their French technical manager J Rondalin, twiglets were introduced by Peek Frean & Co in 1930, initially marketed as a cocktail drink accompaniment. They are now (2018) manufactured by Jacob’s Biscuits in Merseyside. The word ‘twiglet’, meaning ‘a small twig’ can be traced back to at least 1825. 1935 Advertisement 2013 |
