Ale Gruel

Oats boiled with ale. A strengthening or restorative drink.

Ale gruel is repeatedley mentioned in 18th and 19th Century medical textbooks, sometimes as a ‘carrier’ in which medicines are served.

George Garbutt’s 1819 history of Sunderland notes that ale gruel was provided by a charity for the benefit of pregnant women.
