 Hard or semi-hard sugar sweet strongly flavoured with clove. Always red and white, clove rock is made as a white-coated red stick which is cut to short lengths for sale, or as a harder individual sweet with red-and-white stripes. Almost certainly of Irish origin, Clove Rock is known in England at least since an article in ‘The Hampshire Telegraph‘ on Saturday 18 November 1899 (p2)  |
