Very small individual cup-type sponge cakes, usually decorated with icing and possibly cherries, angelica etc.

First known from advertisements around 1889 in – among other places the ‘Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette‘ of Friday 30 August 1889 (p1) – for “The Latest Novelty – Macfarlane, lang and Co’s Fairy Cakes – assorted varieties, sultana, Madeira etc.”
