 It was formerly the custom of the City of Gloucester to present a pie of Lampreys caught in the River Severn to the reigning monarch at Christmas. This custom was kept up until 1836 and was revived in 1893, not at Christmas, but in May, when a rather magnificent pie, with finely moulded paste and enamelled silver skewers which also served as spoons, was presented to Her Majesty (From A Righte Merrie Christmasse – The Story of Christ-Tide by John Ashton, 1894)  |
