 Spherical, c3/4 ins diameter, boiled sugar sweets, of a very dark brown colour, strongly flavoured with mint. Known from newspaper reports at least since 1846. The 1849 advertisments for McDonald's of Newcastle ('The only steam factory in Newcastle') show 'small', 'large' and 'machine' Black Bullets at 5d per lb. The 'Jesmona' brand, which now predominates, is known from advertisements of Johnson & Dodds in Newcastle in the 1950s and is now manufactured by Maxton's of Sheffield.  |
