An article in the 'London Standard' on Friday 6 December 1861 complained, then just as now, against mysterious additives in food and the 'false epicures' who prefer appearance above taste, though we might all, it hopes, expect gooseberries which "should resemble this distinguished fruit and not coddled peas." |
