Coddled Peas

Fruit and Vegetables
Extinct
Yorkshire

Peas cooked like chestnuts. They are put into a tin and stewed in a hot oven. Known from Sidney Addy's 'Glossary of words used in the neighbourhood of Sheffield' of 1888.

An article in the 'London Standard' on Friday 6 December 1861 complained, then just as now, against mysterious additives in food and the 'false epicures' who prefer appearance above taste, though we might all, it hopes, expect gooseberries which "should resemble this distinguished fruit and not coddled peas."
