Low bake white wheat flour sandwich biscuit, typically 1.8ins x 1.4ins x1/2ins thick, of two fingers decorated with a distinctive rococo pattern around a diamond-shaped cartouche carrying the words 'CUSTARD CREAM', with a layer of pale vanilla fondant between. Custard Creams are now produced by several biscuit makers and it is not clear where they originate. Likely candidates are Peak, Frean & Co of Bermondsey, who perfected the cream sandwich type of biscuit at the beginning of the 20th Century.
