Marzipan

Preserves

A semi-hard paste of sugar and ground almonds, often with egg. Commonly placed on top of rich fruit cakes, beneath the sugar icing.

Marzipan, or marchpane (or marzepaine, marcipan, marzapane, marzopane) was formerly the whole cake, only being reduced to a mere decoration by the latter part of the 18th Century.
