 Most usually potato chunks with red meat mince in a plain shortcrust case, with little gravy. One of the most popular of snack pie forms. The first printed reference to a meat and potato pie we can find is a court report in the 'Cheshire Observer' on Saturday 24 February 1855 where one William Birkhill was arraigned for stealing such a pie. Thereafter the dish regularly occurs in the lists of nourishing foods prepared by 'dietarys' for meals for workhouse inmates and 'out relief' for the poor. The Meat Products (England) Regulations of 2003 define 'meat' and 'meat product', and require certain types of product to contain a minimum amount of meat. For this reason, these pies, though usually known and sold as 'Meat and Potato' are usually strictly described as 'Potato and Meat'.
