Pea-Wet

Sauces and Spicery
Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland

The reduced water in which dried peas have been boiled, used as a soup or gravy.

Although now rarely met with other than as a Chip-Shop addition to Fish and Chips, various 19th Century sources (including the Reports of the 1843 Commissioners on the Employment of Children) refer to Pea-Wet as being, with bread, a fairly commonplace breakfast.
