Small-chopped fruits and vegetables (carrot, swede, cauliflower, gherkin, apple, date, garlic) stewed in vinegar with salt, spices and dark brown sugar until a rich sauce is formed. Coloured dark brown with caramel. 1945-47 Branston advertisement The most noted brand was first made in 1922 in the Burton upon Trent suburb of Branston, Staffordshire, by Crosse & Blackwell, a company initially specialising in supplying Indian pickles and condiments. In 2004 the brand was bought by Premier Foods and production was moved to Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, where a disastrous fire temporarily halted production leading to the Great Pickle Crisis of 2004. Branston give their ingredients (2014) as; "Vegetables in Variable Proportions (54%) (Carrot, Rutabaga, Onion, Cauliflower, Marrow, Gherkin), Sugar, Barley Malt Vinegar, Water, Spirit Vinegar, Modified Maize Starch, Date Paste (Dates, Rice Flour), Apple Pulp (Apple, Preservative: Sodium Metabisulphite), Salt, Tomato Paste, Dried Spices, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Onion Powder, Colour (Sulphite Ammonia Caramel), Flavouring." |
