Gentleman's Relish

Sauces and Spicery

Trade name of a very salty anchovy paste with butter, herbs and spices made as 'Patum Peperium Gentleman's Relish' since 1828. It is now produced by Elsenham Foods and comes in a passable plastic imitation of the original small, round, white-glazed earthenware pots. Eaten on thin toast, in scrambled eggs or as a topping for jacket potatoes.

The name was used by Miles Gibson for the title of his novel (and TV film starring Billy Connolly) about the Victorian pornographer Kingdom Swann.
